Hopwood Gear Ltd: Gear Manufacture

During the process of manufacturing gears there are many different materials that are used. Their use is dependent on what kinds of design the gear is to be made to. Although steel is used in for high strength designs, the ease of making complicated shapes out of cast iron, makes it one of the most common materials used. The process of casting involves pouring molten metal into a casting mould and, as it cools, the iron takes on the shape of the mould. When there is a need for noise reduction in the gears, non metallic materials are more often used. These range from rawhide, wood, synthetic resins like nylon and compressed paper.

Where low noise at high speed, dry running and excellent wear resistance is necessary, materials such as aluminium, bronze and stainless steel are also used. The range of materials available may seem like a complicated process and at Hopwood Gear Ltd, we provide a complete service that includes alternative materials for specific types of gears.
